No More Clothes This Year

Don’t worry… I will still be wearing clothes!  They will just come from my closet rather than the thrift store.

Last week when I went to town, my husband asked me to see if I could find a pair of overalls and a flannel shirt at a thrift store to dress a scarecrow he’s welding.  I had to go to the thrift store anyway to drop off a few boxes of donations, but this was the first time in about two months that I had gone there to shop.

Now that I’ve done so much clutter-busting around here, I love the way our house feels.  I love how easy it is to keep clean.  The bedrooms pretty much clean themselves, since we don’t have so much stuff in them anymore.  And the living area just needs counters wiped and toys picked up at the end of the day.  I am never going back to having a bunch of stuff that we don’t need.  And that mindset made thrift store shopping a very different experience.  Rather than browsing around the store looking at all sorts of stuff, I headed straight for the jeans and flannel shirts.  I found overalls and a great scarecrow shirt for a total of five bucks.  I also happened to notice a very big, sturdy clothes drying rack that was in much better shape than the ones I had.  I have four of them, which get pretty heavy use during the winter when the outdoor clothesline doesn’t work as well (we don’t own a dryer).  I bought the new rack, but as soon as I got home I took two of my smaller, less-sturdy racks and put them in my car to donate next time I’m in town.  Other than that, I didn’t even look around the thrift store.  I bought my stuff and headed out, without browsing through clothes for myself or our son, or anything in the kitchen section (those areas used to be my weakness).

As far as clothes go, I’ve decided to commit to not buying any clothing for myself or our son until at least next year.  I got three great pairs of shoes for our son last month, and they should last him through the rest of the year (they have some room to grow).  He has plenty of clothes too, most of which also have room to grow.  I used to love shopping for clothes, but I’ve decided that I prefer having a closet with plenty of room between the clothes.  When I sorted through my clothes over the last several weeks, I got rid of a ton of stuff, and now the clothes that I love – that I wear all the time – are all that’s left.  And I truly don’t need any more.  It’s a great feeling, and I find that I have no desire at all to browse through clothes at the thrift store.  My car is no longer affected by the gravitational pull that the thrift store use to exert over it ;)  Well, I guess it is, because these days it seems like I always have stuff in my car to drop off as donations every time I go to town.  The donation box isn’t filling up as quickly as it was a few weeks ago, but I still much prefer to have stuff go out of the house than come in.

What’s the longest you’ve gone without buying clothes?  I know that there are some people who hate shopping for clothes, and they probably go long stretches all the time.  But if you really enjoy it (as I used to), it’s a bit tougher to give it up, especially if all your clothes come from a thrift store where the price isn’t much of a concern.  So I’m curious… any former clothes shoppers out there who have gone more than a year without buying any clothing?

i’ve recently discovered the joys of swapping – i went to two this spring and decided i’ll probably never buy any new clothes again. total shopping fix and the price is getting rid of my own stuff.

that being said, i did need some new shoes and shorts. i headed to goodwill (rather than the expensive consignment store or target) and scored 2 pair of cute shorts for $4 each. I also found 6 (!!!!) pairs of super cute shoes for $5 each.

so even though i just visited a thift shop yesterday, in my minimalist lite state of mind, i think it is progress.

Wow – and here I was impressed with myself when I made it through a whole month without buying clothes!

It hasnt been a year for me, but it has been a good 3-4 months. When I DID go, it was a thrift store, and I remember that I spent less than $30 for 18 new shirts for work getting ready for the warmer seasons. I like to shop out of season at the thrift store because there is so much more of a selection, and they are all marked down 50% off of their normal price!

Can I go a year without clothes shopping? Probably not.
    6-7 months? Absolutely.

Thanks for writing this great article. Clean closets! You rule!

My frustration was that my weight fluctuates up and down 5 lbs weekly, which wouldn’t be bad except the weight gain hits right at the hips. Then no skirts or pants fit for that season, of course. That used to cause me to run to the store to try to find SOMETHING to wear.

So I am now just wearing wrap skirts from import store in Golden, Colorado — the Golden Himalaya. They are made from recycled silk Saris. Some made of cotton. They are GORGEOUS, reversible, and tie to whatever size I am. I get two skirts each year, 30-35 dollars each. Just about every solid casual top matches since they have many colors in the skirts. It satisfies my love for color and design. I don’t feel deprived at all. I have a great time looking at the patterns and colors and choosing which one to wear.

Definitely try skirts on in person. I haven’t been happy in the past with any I’ve found on ebay. Hand wash in cold, don’t wring, and look for skirts with well sewn edges.

And winter means soft Yoga pants to keep warm. I have plenty so won’t get any more. It’s only been 5 months for me not buying clothes — but except for some Coolmax shirts to help me not pass out in summer, that’s the plan for the rest of the year. To stay away from that WASTE of time called shopping and trying to find something to match an expensive piece.

I am in the midst of a massive declutter and I haven’t gotten to our clothes just yet. I’m 16w pregnant and still in the weird in-between phase so that will need to wait just a little more.

But I don’t think I will need many new maternity clothes this time. I’ve got plenty from before, plus I’ve got some on loan from a friend.

I was cleaning out my closet the other day and was amazed at stuff I had that I never wore…mind you they were in different sizes, but still! I can go shopping in my closet too.

I have just completed no clothes buying for a season. Which was only 3 months. I also had a huge wardrobe toss out and needed a couple of things for winter (which was a new season) phew! I have only brought 1 cardi, 1 top and 1 polar fleece, and a couple of bras. I did participate in a couple of clothes swaps though. So all in all I think 3 new clothing items for the last 6 months is pretty good.

I hit the end of my not shopping rope. I got so bummed the other day because quite a bit of my clothes are wearing out. Considering I’ve been wearing most of them since we got married…5 years ago…I can’t really complain. I told my husband just this morning, that I’m very sorry, I’m going to have to buy some new (to me) clothes, and he got very frustrated with me. Apparently he’s been telling me I need more than one pair of jeans for quite a while, and I’ve been saying “I’m fine.” Well, I’m not fine anymore, so let’s see what Goodwill has to offer.

Yoga pants are very comfortable while doing yoga. My day starts with yoga and just running is why I have so much running and yoga wear tights. I totally agree with you that the race in the morning is very beneficial to our health.

The longest time I went without clothes shopping was the time I joined the compact – last year. I lasted 6 months, then went on a long trip back home to India – forgot about the compact and went crazy shopping. As in shopping for the sake of shopping. :) Big regret when I got back.

This year, I’ve reduced what comes in and increased what goes out. Every time you post about the bags you drop at your local store, I feel inspired to get rid of some stuff as well.

I have not gone true clothes shopping for eight years. I started a clothing swap and have clothed my family from that. What very few needed items I could not get from the swap we purchase (like undergarments and socks).

I hate clothes shopping so going a year without buying clothes is not a big deal for me. I bought a couple pairs of running/hiking shorts last summer and I don’t think I’ve bought anything since. I need to buy a tie for my wedding later this month and after that I don’t foresee needing to buy clothes for a long time.

6 months. I was on my high horse at a dinner party one night towards the end of university, expounding on the evils of consumerism, when a friend challenged me to try and live my values.
So I made an agreement to not buy any new clothes for 6 months. This was in August, so the 6 months took me through 3 family birthdays, Chirstmas, New Years and a few fancy dress parties.
And while I was glad to get a few new pairs of knickers at the end of the 6 months, it was surprisingly easy. And I think it has had long lasting knock on effects – it’s now 5 years later (that’s scary!) and I still have a very frugal attitude to clothes – while I do shop occasionally now it’s to replace items and complement what I have and I buy mostly second-hand and always quality, rather than stocking up on 5 cheap t-shirts in different colours that don’t last.

I love buying clothes and always ask for gift cards for gifts so I can spend them on clothes BUT my husband and I decided two months ago to go an entire year without buying clothes. I said until the end of the year but he’s trying to get me to go an entire year. I don’t advertise it with my friends but when they do find out they look at me cross-eyed and slowly a frown appears on their face. It’s as if I told them I was in a car accident and could never walk again!
I will try swapping clothes and I have a ton of fabric to dive into (one of my past passions is designing clothes). I still have enough left on a gift card to purchase socks, bras and undies. Oh, and I will purchase a pair of running shoes in the next month! So I’m not completely off the clothing train…but I’m pretty close.

Ah, the feeling of clutter-ness! Yes! Good, huh?

I’ve been “in the process” of ridding our house of accumulated things from the last 30 years. It’s a process, especially given when you live with a pack rat who finds uses for everything! I’ve donated to libraries, vietnam vets continuously these past three years (yes, years!) and still I could donate so much more. I swear that the only one I will truly accomplish this is if I put the house for sale; then the Beloved will truly be forced to see what is a keeper or not .

Nonetheless, though not easy on my end because of the One-Who-Will-Not-Let-Go, I tackle and tackle, weed and weed, on a monthly basis. And, shopping? Pfft! Haven’t bought a thing that does not have a use for the last three+ years as well, including clothes and shoes. Yes, it does make life so much easier when you just live with what you need.

Congratulations for passing that clothing train……

    10 months.

Last year in august I bought a dress for the christening of my niece. My brother and his wife are the Jones family. I hardly wear dresses because I’m a shivery kind of person.

This year in may I bought a shirt to wear to work. I did need that because last year I wore out the other two decent shirts I can wear to meetings. In may I also bought two pair of shoes. One of them to replace a pair that was worn out after five years of quite intense use, the other a variation of a sandal that is wearing out.

I had too many clothes that are beautiful but not comfortable/warm/easy to clean enough to wear daily. And when I can wear them, they might not fit.
Lots of the clothes that are warm, comfy and easy to clean are hardly good enough to wear to work, but I do it anyway.
In the last two years I got rid of lots of clothes, and now I’m applying the one in, at least one out rule. I want to have more room in my closets, but because of my fluctuating volume I’m not there yet.

Oh, I did get four pair of new socks, but I knitted them myself. To me that doesn’t count as new clothes, because it’s an expense in the hobby department. And it’s a luxury wearing them!

I love shopping for clothes. Obviously, that is a real budget buster. It also contributes to worrying about your appearance. I pledged to go from January 1st through March 1st of this year without buying clothes. I made it until March 22! That was the longest stretch I’ve ever gone without shopping for clothes and I want to try to do that again starting in August.

I don’t intentionally not buy clothes, it just works out that way because I’m not really interested. Kind of like asking a nonsmoker how long they’ve gone without a cigarette.

I replaced a worn out tshirt last September, got a 3pk of socks over Christmas and a thrift store turtle neck in March. Grand total $15. The turtle neck was bought at their end of winter sale for $2 and I was there dropping off 3 garbage bags of donations.

I’ll need new winter boots in the fall, but other than that I have no plans to buy anything until something else wears out, and that could be months or even a year or two. At Christmas I received a couple of gift cards from a store that carries a good assortment of well priced office basics, so if my upcoming job change requires a few new items, at least those will be “free”. I’m going to wait and see what the new office’s dress code is before I assume I’ll actually need anything.

My shopping weakness used to be home decor, but over the past few years I’ve lost my love of the hunt for the perfect accessory. I guess the house either started to look “done” (which I was told never happens) or more likely I just became more interested in other things. Maybe it’s age or just becoming somewhat repulsed by obvious consumption that I just don’t get much joy out of buying anything. When I go to a store it’s with a list and a purpose. Now I put far more value in travel, so if I were to look at a really expense pair of shoes I’d see buying them as a lost hotel night in Venice for example. Fast food dinner vs. admission to the Louvre. When you see something in terms of an equivalent purchase given up it sure makes it easy to put back something you don’t reeeealy need or love.

I actually went for 18 consecutive months without buying any clothes, shoes, lingerie, cosmetics, etc in Jun 2006- Sep 2007. I accomplished this task by putting myself on a financial fast. It was an incredible feeling seeing how much money I saved. I still have the habit of taking an occasional fast. I am currently on a no shopping fast from July-December. I still go to the malls knowing that I cannot buy any thing to reinforce the discipline.

quick entry quick exit, that is how guys do it, glad you see the sense in it

*I’m a student who really likes fashion, so I wouldn’t like going without ‘new’ clothes for more than a year. However, last february I pledged not to buy more than ten pieces of clothing for twelve months (and buy ethically responsible if I do).
At the start I found it quite difficult., but as I continue the habit of windowshopping has mostly worn off.
I was going strong for three months now, but just yesterday I bought a new coat. However, I feel good about my purchase, as this was something I actually NEEDED. Very liberating.

    *Please excuse my English…
