Frugal Fun For A Toddler

Bookmark and Share

A couple weeks ago, my parents gave our son a set of keys.  They are currently his favorite possession, and go everywhere with him.  My parents were inspired by the fact that our son was always trying to play with our keys, and they decided to make him his own set.  They gathered up all the old random keys that they could find (you know, the ones that are hiding out in the back of the junk drawer or on a shelf in the garage, and nobody knows what they unlock anymore), and put them on a ring.  Then they made a tag with our son’s name on it and added it to the key ring.  Then they picked out a nice metal key chain at the thrift store (it has a picture of koalas on it, which our son thinks is nifty) and added that to the mix.  The result is a set of keys that looks just like ours.

Our son loves those keys.  He pretends to “drive” his toy train and even the wooden parking garage that sits in our living room (It has a nice little hole at the top that he can use as an ignition).  The keys go with him in his wagon, and have even gone to bed with him a few times.  It was a simple, easy, very inexpensive gift (free except for the little key ring they bought at a thrift store) and it’s provided a huge amount of fun for our son.  Obviously this wouldn’t be a good toy for children who are young enough to still be putting things in their mouths, but if they’re past that stage, what kid wouldn’t want their very own set of keys?

My grandparents had a “Key Box” when I was little, and I remember all of us grandkids just loving it! He made a key ring with all the keys, then put the random locks and other bits that they went-to into a big box. The puzzle was to figure out which key went where, which when you are 3 is loads of fun!

Hearing about your son’s love for the key sets brought back memories and made me smile. :)

I did something similar with my daughter. When she was old enough to grab things, the first thing she would go for would be my car keys (which also had all my other keys on it). I remembered that I had saved the extra set of keys from first car and popped some extra keys (not the ones that go to the house) and we found some great key chains at Old Navy for only 5 dollars. We got her an R for her name and a little butterfly. So now, she has her “car keys” and I have mine and with the keychains, it’s easy to tell them apart. I love how simple and virtually free things seem to be the most fun for children. They are naturally and instinctively frugal, we should all take a lesson.

Wow, what a cool idea! And what cool parents you have for thinking of something so cool, instead of going to the toy department and buying something new and plastic. :)

I miss that age – they are so wonderful.
I remember my son having an old set of keys – I think it was only two or three keys but he had fun with them & “used” them in the same way.

    Enjoy him while he’s little.

This is what large toy retailers fear most and I’m glad! Kids don’t need much in the way of expense when it comes to toys at this age. They just need to have engagement and tons of love and attention.

My son loves anything simple like that. A box, a tennis ball, a lawn ornament. Kids with imaginations love anything.

I think keys have been fun for kiddos since they were invented! I remember giving my own child the plastic ones on a ring. Hated to give her my ‘real’ keys though. She was always throwing things….

    :) Thanks for the memories.

What a great idea. My 3 year old son also like to play with keys. and i have lost some keys. I’ll apply this idea. He will be happy too and there will be no loss of any key.
