A Credit Card We Will Not Be Getting

by FrugalBabe on May 21, 2009

Quite a while ago, I signed us up for a program to opt out of credit card offers.  We still get preapproved credit card offers for our business quite frequently, but the personal ones are very few and far between.  When they do arrive, they go into the shredder.

But yesterday, we got one that I was actually curious enough to open.  It came in a large black envelope, and felt solid, sort of like a fancy wedding invitation.  The envelope had gold stamped writing that just said “black card” on the outside.  Inside was a note and fancy card saying that my husband was invited to apply for a “black card” and that the offer is only open to 1% of US residents.  The card is a Visa from Barclays, and is apparently made of carbon.  They wrote a bunch of stuff about how card members get concierge service and fancy rewards gifts (with points credited at a rate of 1 per dollar spent on the card, which is exactly what we get now on our plain old Visa that is made of plastic).

The kicker?  This card has an annual fee of $495.  That is not a typo.  Five hundred bucks a year, just to have the card.  Plus another $195 per year if he wants to add me to the account so that I can have my own fancy black credit card made of carbon.

Does anybody seriously care what their credit card is made of?  It could be laminated cardboard as far as I’m concerned, as long as it works.  We pay a $19/year fee for our card, and have for years.  I’m reading a lot of stuff lately that indicates that most cards will likely have annual fees of about $20 once the new credit card rules go into effect, but the fee we pay has never bothered us, since we usually get back between $150 and $200/year in cash rewards.  But $495 ($690 for both of us) is a different story.

I wonder how many people will actually apply for this black card.  Sheesh, those concierge services must be out of this world.

Sheesh! Is that supposed to be some sort of environmental thing? Being made out of carbon? Sounds silly to me. Yeah, I think I would skip that as well. We have a couple credit cards open…Discover, Visa and Mastercard. We only really use one, but have the others open in case a certain retailer won’t take the one we normally use. My husband also has an AmEx through work. We have one of every major credit card. We have had the cards open for quite some time. I see no reason to ever open another credit card, no matter what they are offering!

Yeah, I’ve gotten similar things from Amex, I think it was their ‘gold’ card with concierge services and some similar $500 yearly fee. I would imagine even if you have access to concierge services, you’d still have to pay for something, or tip them or whatever, so I just see it as a huge waste of money.

I sure hope all my cards don’t start charging annual fees… I have 4, one of each (Amex, Disc, MC, Visa), and that would suck if I had to start paying like $20 a year for each of them.

Something is wrong with your site… my computer’s virus scanner came up with a big warning that there was a redirect attempt by one of your advertisers… FYI

Kelly – I think it’s just a gimmick, but I have no idea. And Chacha, I agree… it seems like a big waste of money any way you look at it.
Smartgirl, thanks for letting me know. If I can figure out what ad it is, I’ll delete it. Please let me know if it happens again! I have all sorts of virus blocking software on my computer (thanks for my super-safe-surfing husband), and I’ve never seen anything like that on my site, so hopefully it was a random one-time thing. I’ll keep an eye out for it.

We get rewards on our Capital One Visa (1 point per dollar) with no annual fee. :)

Oh my. I don’t think I even charge $500 on my current credit card in a year. Does the concierge do windows, though? I might consider it …

Um, plastic is made (usually) from petroleum and petroleum is carbon.

Yeah, I don’t know what their big deal was about the carbon, but they mentioned it a lot, and specifically said that it was a patented thing.
