Don't forget that the jarred stuff does not taste like the real stuff. One taste of the bananas and one of the sweet potatoes was enough to switch me to homemade. Blech. I'm sure you end up stunting the kids' palette development and predisposing them to favor bland, sweet, processed foods.

I'm glad to hear you are making your own baby food. Much less expensive and you know what goes into it. However, I have to add that we never bothered with "baby food". I nursed my babies exclusively until they showed an interest in food. My oldest (who has Down Syndrome) finally showed an interest in food at the age of 13 months. He always sat with us at the table and we let him choose whatever he was interested in from whatever we were having for dinner. We'd mash some things, but mostly he had finger foods. Now my youngest was a different child altogether. He showed an interest in food from the table at the ripe old age of FOUR months! :-)

Yay! You are such an inspiration to me. Our baby is due in Feb, and I am so doing cloth diapers and homemade baby food (once that time comes), in part thanks to you! All my (real-life) friends think I am crazy, but I am with you. It's so much cheaper and healthier to go this route.

De-lurking to say...yay for homemade baby food! We have 5 kids, the youngest of which is just starting to try solids, and we have never purchased jarred baby food either. It's expensive, and nutritionally inferior to homemade. Plus, it's fun to make baby food!

Also, we made the raw pecan cookies after reading your post (and Kristen's Raw) and....OH MY. They are GOOD. I see another batch of raw cookies in my future!

Too funny! I just posted about this on my blog the other day...how I don't have to head toward the baby aisle while grocery shopping. I do still need to get a food mill because right now I am only giving my baby pureed fruits and veggies, although I am starting to leave them a little more chunky. They only baby food purchase I did make was a box of rice cereal and box of baby oatmeal. And while I am not as frugal as you and do spend more than I should at Target and Babies R Us (but not nearly as much as some of my friends)I have found that having a baby doesn't need to be too expensive!
