A Frugal – And Tasty – Birthday Present

One of my coworkers who is also a good friend of mine had a birthday today.  I wanted to do something nice for her, but I also wanted to keep in line with my frugal self and my desire to not contribute to consumerism.  So this morning I baked these muffins for her.  The ingredients probably cost less than $2 or $3, and I had everything on hand already.  I ran out of white flour so I used half white and half whole wheat – turned out great.  I reused a funky birthday gift bag that someone gave me last year, and made a new tag for it using felt, glue, and glitter that I got at a garage sale in 1991.  I’m serious – it was a huge yard sale, and one of the things I bought was a tin full of bottles of glitter.  I still keep it with my craft supplies – you never know when you’ll need to write someone’s name on felt with glitter.

Anyway, I lined the bag with foil, added the muffins and the felt/glitter tag, and took the whole thing to the library.  My friend was thrilled, and so were all my other coworkers with whom she shared the muffins.  Mission accomplished – I spent very little money, reused a gift bag, and gave my friend something that I know she’ll use up – nothing to sit around and gather dust.  And I have to say, if you’re looking for a good muffin recipe, this is a good one.
