When you are debt free it opens up so many options for how to do things and it's nice to be able to make things around you nicer because you have wiggle room. Remodeling a kitchen definitely adds to the food bill for a while. When our kitchen was totally gutted to the studs, we ate at subway almost everyday :) I totally agree with all of that.
