I have just had a baby and we were bought as a present and expensive stroller. I have been browsing ebay and re your post I have something to say. Expensive stuff has a resale value. so the best thing to do would be to buy your desired item on ebay at its resale value (much less than the brand new price) then when you are done you can sell it at about the same price you bought it. eg Stokke tripp trapp high chairs - very expensive from a shop (GBP£165) but on ebay £GBP100 - and it will keep its value as it is a desirable item. likewise the pricey strollers. So my tip is to 'splurge' on second hand quality items and resell them after you have used them.

Thanks for the heads up on the blogs

I tend to agree with having less stuff (trying to be a minimalist) and having more experiences/memories/good food in my belly
