Bought My First Diapers

Yesterday I bought some cloth diapers from a lady I found on Craigslist.  She sold me six diapers and three waterproof diaper covers for $21.  And she threw in a box of nursing pads and a changing pad for free.  The diapers are shaped with elastic at the legs, but no velco closures.  She said I could use pins if I wanted, but she used them with the diaper covers – which do have velcro – and said that the covers held them in place just fine without pins. 

The diapers are a very simple pattern that my mother and I should be able to easily copy when we make diapers out of the flannel sheets I bought a few months ago.  We can make some more in this same size and then just increase the size to make larger diapers.  I think I’ll add velcro to the diapers I bought yesterday, just to make things easier (diaper pins at 2 am make me nervous, and I’d like as much protection against diaper blowouts as I can get).

I also picked up the baby sling that I found on Craigslist.  Between the foot that’s been stuck in my right ribs for the last two days and all this baby stuff I’m accumulating, it’s starting to feel very real.  We’re so excited to meet this baby, and feeling very good about the budget we’ve stuck to throughout the getting-ready-for-baby months.

    Have you considered a snappi? It’s what we use instead of pins.

    Pins are kind of a pain but it’s nice to have some more closure so that you can reuse the covers instead of having to change them out with every diaper. Especially early on with breastfed newborn poop!

    Are you going to make hourglass ones or fitted with velcro? My hourglasses have worked better because they are so thick. The wraps never get wet and I can reuse them right away. Natalie outgrew her fitted velcro diapers really quick, I am glad I didn’t pay a whole lot for them.

    Do you have something that the baby can jump in? Natalie’s exersaucer let her jump and bounce around, she had a good old time in it.

    Back in the dark ages, before disposable diapers, when my children were babies, to make the pins slip through the diapers easily, I would run the pin point through my hair. Being careful, of course, not to scratch my head.

    I ended up making my own diapers with flannel receiving blankets as well. I made them in an hourglass shape, slightly bigger at the back then in the front. The corners would overlap when put on the baby but i never need to put velcro. The lady who sold you the diapers is rights- as long as the wraps close- you don’t need pins (scary) or velcro(can be rough on the baby)- or snappi (never could figure it out).

    Also- You can make your own wraps from fleece. Same hourglass shaper, slightly bigger. I did put velcro in them when the baby was young, and moved onto elastic as he grew.

    A life saver for me—use a fleece liner inside the clothe diaper for nights. it wicks the moisture away from the baby or else they cry VERY loudly.

    Good Luck—I timed myself once-the whole cycle of chaging-nursing-burping, changing- took me 45 minutes.

    Ahh those were the days.

    have you considered babywipes? I cut up an old towel into small squares and hemmed them and used them with water – washed them with the nappies. dont be too concerned with baby cosmetics either – they dont need moisturiser, talcum powder or anything except for a bit of soap and water.     I’ve been stocking up on (used) cloth diapers too, and I’ve had a foot stuck in my (right) ribs for the past two months! Pleasant isn’t it? ;)
