Grace - we have a Habitat store about 1/2 mile from our house :) I go there all the time, and that's where we got our great storm door ($50, retail is about $200) along with a whole slew of other stuff for our house over the years. It's always one of the first places we look for stuff.

Do you have a Habitat for Humanity resale location near you? We have one here near us - they sell construction materials that were not used in Habitat Houses - and it raises money for the organization. Might be of some help when you do start doing your Honey-Do list.

Once, back when I was still in the military, I was in someones housing on base where they had marble counter tops. I couldn't believe it, because the Army is notorious for strictly utilitarian housing.

I asked the occupants about it, and it turned out it was CONTACT PAPER!! yes, marble contact paper. And honestly I couldn't tell. If your counters are really bugging you right now, and it will be a while before you can change them out, it might be worth a try. . . .

Even tho your appliances may be still working well, you could save a significant amount of money by buying new Energy Star applicances. Check with your local electric/gas company for cost comparisons. Some older refrigerators use twice as much electric as new. And, as you found out, there are people out there replacing slightly used appliances for new ones so checking classified ads can help. Also, check out the scratch and dent section in your preferred store. We've seen Home Depot have major discounts on appliances with cosmetic damage in places you wouldn't see.
Your list of home improvements is a great way to see what and how much you need to do. We had neighbors, in their late 20s with their first house, who decided to build a deck. It took them just less than 1 year. They bought x amount of boards a week or as they could afford it, stored in the garage, then built it. For them it was easier to accumulate the materials than the money - they felt they would probably spend the money elsewhere, but could not waste the materials staring them in the face!!

Seems like you have a lot of projects lined up. My upstairs carpet is on its last legs too and I really want to replace it with laminate flooring. However, doing it ourselves seems so daunting!

Hi Udandi! I checked out that list of episodes that you sent, but I didn't see their house in it. I don't remember their names, but I'd recognize the kitchen... I'm not sure whether their show has already aired or not. I'll keep checking back - it would be fun to see the whole thing in action!

has their episode aired yet? i see they've got 3 kitchen episodes, but only two that started with white appliances so I've narrowed it down to the one I think it is!
if this link works, it is the episode guide:

That sounds like a great way of going about improving. Especially the whole not going into debt part. I'll have to remember that. Seems like it'd be a lot less overwhelming.
