We try to balance spending money and saving. I probably tend a bit more towards the saving side--like you. But there definitely is a time to spend some money. It's not just about trees, it's about the fact that the future isn't guaranteed. While you should plan for the future, you should also take advantage of today. It's all about the opportunity cost.

frugal babe,
very good post. i struggle with this exact thing. i want to be responsible and save for the future. to do a good job with this it's easy to become obsessive and forget that there are certain things that need to be taken care of now rather than later. i think owning a home and dealing with things like this is exactly when you need to invest now. often if you don't then it'll add risk to your home and/or cost you more run down the road. we're struggling with a lot of this as homeowners and i feel a bit over my head.

thanks for sharing! ladydoughgirl

Definitely sounds worth the money. I'd get references or at least be there while they do the work. My brother-in-law had a terrible time when they finally decided to hire someone to cut down the dying maple in their front yard. The tree service came while they were at work, and when my brother-in-law got home, the dying maple was still there, but the vibrant, gorgeous 50 year old oak was in pieces on the front lawn. Yikes!

I also wanted to keep my big shade trees forever, but guess what? They were the live-fast die-young type. At the end of a tree's life span there is nothing you can do (but get someone to cut it down in such a way that it doesn't fall on your roof or your neighbor's car, otherwise it may fall down in some random direction during a storm).

I hope your tree has hundreds of years left in it, but if not, I would recommend not spending money to trim it now. Arborists can tell you about your trees and may also be able to recommend tree trimmers.

You definitely need to trim the tree if you live in an area with storms! Good decision. I need to remind myself of this sometimes too.
