I'd get references or at least be there while they do the work. My brother-in-law had a terrible time when they finally decided to hire someone to cut down the dying maple in their front yard. The tree service came while they were at work, and when my brother-in-law got home, the dying maple was still there, but the vibrant, gorgeous 50 year old oak was in pieces on the front lawn. Yikes! Definitely sounds worth the money. I’d get references or at least be there while they do the work. They were the live-fast die-young type. At the end of a tree's life span there is nothing you can do (but get someone to cut it down in such a way that it doesn't fall on your roof or your neighbor's car, otherwise it may fall down in some random direction during a storm). I hope your tree has hundreds of years left in it, but if not, I would recommend not spending money to trim it now.
