I Never Thought I’d Pay For Rocks…
Yesterday afternoon, we set out with the best of intentions to finish our xeriscaping project without spending more than $50 (making the total for the project about $200). Alas, rocks aren’t cheap. We tried to find free ones (no luck), so we resigned ourselves to paying for them. We found a place that would sell us the amount of rock we needed for $79. Ok, that’s a bit more than we planned, but doable. Then we pondered how to get the rocks home. It was probably 60 – 70 rocks, each weighing between 20 and 80 pounds. That’s a lot of weight.  Our car is old and the shocks aren’t so good. It would have taken about 15 trips back and forth to haul them all home in our car. We thought about renting the home depot truck, but with damage waiver (we only have liability car insurance) and the hourly fee, that would have come to about $30, plus we would have had to load all the rocks by hand into the truck. So we caved and paid the rock place $38 to deliver. They loaded the rocks into a dump truck and had them out here in about an hour.  They dumped them in our front lawn, and all we had to do was move them around the yard where we wanted them. That was hard enough – I sure am glad that we didn’t have to lift each rock into and out of a truck!
Anyway, the yard looks great (I’ll post pictures soon!) and we’re thrilled with how it turned out. We worked in the rain for a lot of the weekend, because we really wanted to get it done by Sunday night. We figured that a rainy day is the best time to be transplanting flowers, and it was better than working in blazing sun. We finally finished around 9pm last night. It was pretty dark by then, so we didn’t get to appreciate the whole thing until today.
Our 4th wedding anniversary is on Saturday, and we decided that we’re going to pick out an anniversary perennial to add to our yard. That’s a perfect present for each of us. Can’t wait for our trip to the nursery! We might go on Friday evening since I have to work at the library on Saturday… and since I’m impatient!
