Adventures on eBay
We sold a telescope on ebay this week. We bought it several years ago for $500. It was a hasty purchase, and we didn’t really shop around much. But we loved it, and had a lot of fun with it for the first year we had it. We could see the rings of Saturn and the moons of Jupiter. We spent many nights out in the back yard looking at the sky, loving our telescope. But after a while, we had seen everything we were going to see with it. It wasn’t powerful enough to see nebulas or far-away galaxies, and there’s only so much you can see on our local planets. So for about two years now, the telescope has been a very fancy decoration in our living room. We finally decided to sell it, and got $230. Mmmm, makes me think we might not have gotten the best deal when we bought it, but that’s water under the bridge, and we did have a blast with it. Anyway, the buyer lives nearby, and came to pick it up (yeah! we didn’t have to pack it up and ship it anywhere!) and paid cash.  Â
Last night, we decided to take the cash to Costco and stock up on groceries. This seemed like a practical way to use the money. We got a ton of good food, and some extra space in our living room where the telescope used to be. And it’s nice to know that the telescope has a new home with someone who will no doubt be as enthralled as we were when we first got it - he was probably outside looking at Saturn while we were in Costco last night.  Â
[...] After our success last week with selling our telescope on eBay, we decided to sell an electric guitar that we’ve had sitting around. I bought the guitar as a gift for my father about 10 years ago. He’s played acoustic guitar for 35 years, and had often mentioned that an electric guitar would be fun. So when I was a senior in college, working at Safeway and feeling rich because I had money left over after paying the rent and grocery bill, I decided to buy one for him. I didn’t know squat about electric guitars, so I just went to a music store and asked the guy there what I needed. He sold me a guitar and an amp for a total of about $500. [...]
